Korbin was kneeling. The blue blade was in reverse grip hovering behind him.
The black wolf within was soaking in everything within his sight.
Nobody moved.
Then the old Matriarch clicked with her tongue and broke the silence.
âAh, good fight. He broke the law of the ring. Good riddance. Dinner will be lighter in the future without his constant bickering.â
The Vorrans huffed in shock or amusement, while the humans took in the situation warily.
âYou have faced the test of challenge. You may have a moment, then come to the Hall of Trials.â
With these words, LoâKarr turned and left. But Korbin saw a hint of relief in his old friend's face. RavâNar must have been quite the prick.
Richard and Juliette rushed over, with Kaiser directly behind them, followed by the royal guard and the LC.
âYou gave us quite the shock there for a moment,â said Richard.
The relief was written in his face, and the others were similarly excited and overjoyed.
âMy dear Korbin,â began Juliette. âDonât put me through this again. You have taken ten years from me.â
Korbin returned the blade to Kaiser and cycled with an exhausted smile. He took a water bottle that was offered and chugged down the cool liquid eagerly.
âLord Allister,â said Kaiser excitedly. âThat was quite a display. I fear you have been holding back on us!â
Ovanis simply smiled and bowed.
âCongratulations.â
The LC casually observed his surroundings and finally nodded with a grin.
âI will be ordering those steaks then,â Sanders said smugly.
Korbin set down the water bottle.
âEveryone, itâs not over. The last test will be now. I will see you later.â
With that he left the group and followed LoâKarr into the Hall of Trials.
The nine warriors he had faced were to his right and bowed. The last fighter was a step behind him but also paid him respect.
Korbin slowly nodded back and proceeded. There would be no grandstanding or boasting during the trials. Time for that came later.
His crew was on the left side, led by LoâKarrâs son and his sister. They both grinned and bowed. MarrâTuk, RenarâTuk and SinâRev also grasped their fists in admiration and bowed deeply. RifâKarr huffed.
Such was the way of the Vorran.
Korbin climbed the last steps and entered the hall. Two guards closed the door behind him. He would be alone with the Patriarch.
LoâKarr was already sitting on a cushion in the middle of the hall with his eyes closed. There were carvings of fighters in various scenarios at the walls, but there was nothing else in the great building.
Korbin bowed to the Patriarch and sat down without a word.
After a moment the Vorran opened his eyes.
âKorbin Allister of the humans. You have faced the contest of the wild. You have faced the contest of challenge. Are you willing to face the contest of mind?â
âI am, Patriarch.â
The Patriarch produced a richly decorated black dagger and held it at Korbinâs throat. Magic built up and pressured Korbins mind.
âYou will answer my questions. If you lie, your life is forfeit. Where are you from?â
âThe Korian system. We have a school there for young warriors.
